My Favorite Senior Session Poses

I have reached the point in my career where I have done A LOT of senior sessions. As I have experienced trial and error with senior sessions I have definitely found my favorite go-to poses. There are a few poses that I bring into every senior session, so I thought I would share the wealth and tell you how to prompt the seniors.

Squat and Look

The squat and look has quickly become one of my favorites. You can do it in a variation of different location settings, occasions, and outfits. My favorite way of utilizing this pose is on a winding road. It allows the photo to display beautiful backgrounds and gives the senior a relaxed look. This pose is also a pose that my seniors end up LOVING. I have now implemented it into every session. When telling the client to do this pose just tell them to squat, rest their face in their hand, and look at you. Don't let them bend their head too much or else it will look funky. You can do this pose with a smile, giggle, or straight model face. It is perfect!

Legs on the Chair

I love incorporating props into my photos, especially chairs. A chair can add so much to a photo. You can decorate them with flowers and colors to bring the whole image together. Stools, pillows, and blankets all have the same affect. I love having my clients lay side ways on a chair. I have them put their legs on the arms of the chairs and have them play with their hair. At times it can be awkward, but that often brings natural giggles to the photos that I love. Just have your client sit in the chair and put their legs on the chair. The rest is just natural movements. The photos turn out beautifully.

Drunk Walk

I LOVE a good drunk walk! I have my clients do it every session. It always turns out so cute, and has the best smiles. My seniors always feel kind of stupid when they do this trend, but you have to reassure them that they look cute! Hype them up, give them confidence, and just help them have fun. This prompt is the best way to get a nice walking photo without the subject being stiff. This is a diverse pose that can be used in different locations, outfits, and occasions. It is so cute!

Dress Twirl

Twiriling the skirt of your dress or fidgeting with the skirt of your dress is the perfect subtle movement to add a little life to the photo. If you want to get a photo with less movement, but don't want a stiff pose this is perfect! Just ask your client to spread their legs apart in a power stance, grab the sides of their dress, twirl their dress, while shifting your weight from one side to another. If the movement is too much just tell them to calm it down a little bit, and all should be well! This pose is a great addition to a senior session.

Senior sessions hold so much opportunity to try new things. You can experiment with poses, locations, lighting, and more! I encourage you to try these poses your next senior session!
